What is a prostate screen?
The Better2Know prostate screen helps detect prostate cancer. The test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which is a protein made in the prostate gland. PSA can be produced by normal and cancerous prostate cells with most men having low levels of PSA in their blood. However, a high level of PSA may indicate a problem with the prostate.
Why consider a prostate screen?
If you have the following symptoms a prostate screen may be suitable for you:
- Need to urinate more frequently, particularly at night
- Needing to rush to the toilet
- Difficulty in starting to urinate
- Straining or taking a long time to urinate
- Weak urine flow
- Feeling that your bladder has not emptied fully
- Blood in urine
- Blood in semen
Having one or more symptoms does not necessarily mean you have prostate cancer. If you are concerned about any of the symptoms listed above, you should consider booking this test to check your prostate health. It is common as you age to experience an increase in the size of the prostate because of a non-cancerous prostate enlargement. Symptoms that any cancer might have spread can include pain in your bones, back or testicles, loss of appetite, and unexplained weight loss.
How does this test work?
This screen will require a small sample of blood.
What tests will be run on my sample?
The Better2Know prostate screen will measure:
- Total PSA: Total amount of the PSA in your body, including both the antigens that are bound and those floating freely
- Free PSA: Level of unbound PSA in the blood, which can help to diagnose health issues including prostate cancer or inflammation
- PSA Ratio: The ratio of free PSA to bound PSA to give an overall view of your prostate health
How will I receive my results?
The confidential results of your prostate screen will be available within one working day after your sample has been received at the laboratory. Your results will be ready to view on your secure patient area on the Better2Know website as soon as they are available. Once your results are ready a member of our Patient Services team will advise you when your results are available.
What should I do with my results?
If you receive abnormal PSA levels, you should consult a doctor about the results. Better2Know can arrange private consultations nationwide, with a network of highly skilled doctors based across Spain. If you prefer, you can also take your results to a doctor of your choice.
