This test can detect the presence of the HIV 1 virus just 10 days after any potential exposure, and is available only as part of the Better2Know Early Detection Screen along with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction and is a testing method that extracts and amplifies the genetic material of an organism (in this case the three viruses being tested). This tests for the presence RNA of the virus itself, so the window period is shorter compared with other types of HIV and STI testing. This means it can provide the fastest possible results.
This test is slightly less sensitive than the 28 Day HIV DUO test. If you choose this test, we would recommend that you have a follow up HIV DUO test after waiting at least 28 days.
The results of the Early Detection Screen will be ready just 4 working days from when your sample is received in the laboratory.
